Five faculty members recognized with President’s Teaching Awards

Five faculty members were recently honoured with , the highest honour for teaching at the University of Toronto.  

The award recognizes sustained excellence in teaching and ongoing contributions to educational leadership and innovation. This year’s recipients are:

  • Maria Assif, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of English, 山ǿ Scarborough
  • Ken Derry, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of historical studies, 山ǿ Mississauga
  • Charlie Keil, professor in the cinema studies institute, Faculty of Arts & Science
  • Melody Neumann, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of cell and systems biology, Faculty of Arts & Science
  • Sanjeev Sockalingam, professor in the department of psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine

“Through their impressive work, this year’s award recipients demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching while contributing to an environment that promotes equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in post-secondary education,” said 山ǿ President Meric Gertler.

“On behalf of the University of Toronto, I would like to congratulate all five faculty members on their important achievement. I would also like to thank them for their individual efforts to create a welcoming and intellectually stimulating classroom environment that helps 山ǿ attract students from around the world.”

Winners of the President’s Teaching Award receive $10,000 per year for five years to be used towards professional development. They also become members of the 山ǿ Teaching Academy. The academy meets regularly to discuss matters relevant to teaching and offers advice to the president and the vice-president and provost, as well as the director of .
