The Aradia Ensemble worked with soprano <strong>Claire de S茅vign茅</strong> (MMus 2011) on <em>Vivaldi: Sacred Music, Vol. 4.</em></p> <p>鈥淚 am so excited to be nominated,鈥 says de S茅vign茅. 鈥淚 initially signed on to this album as a passion project since I wasn鈥檛 sure I could do Vivaldi鈥檚 music justice at the time. But I was encouraged to make the music my own. I am so proud to say that I was included in this project with a wonderful group of Canadian musicians.鈥</p> <p>Five nominations are in jazz categories 鈥 Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year: Solo and Jazz Album of the Year: Group 鈥 including recent alumna <strong>Tara Kannangara</strong>&nbsp;(pictured below in a photo by Vanessa Paxton)&nbsp;nominated for her vocal album <strong>Some Version of the Truth.</strong></p> <p>鈥淭he nomination was a complete surprise, definitely unexpected as we are just emerging on to the Canadian Jazz scene,鈥 says Kannangara,&nbsp;who graduated in 2013. 鈥淭hat being said, I'm very proud of the work that my group put into the album; it was a true labour of love. Jazz.</p> <p>鈥淭he Rex Hotel Orchestra is my dream team, made up of players I consider to be the perfect choice for each position,鈥 said 缅北强奸 jazz faculty member <strong>John MacLeod</strong>, leader of John MacLeod &amp; His Rex Hotel Orchestra. The group received a nomination for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year with <em>Our Second Set</em>.</p> <p>鈥淲e don't need to win awards for me to be proud of these guys, I feel that way every time I hear them play.鈥</p> <p>MacLeod鈥檚 ensemble comprises several jazz faculty and alumni including <strong>Terry Promane</strong>, <strong>Mike Murley</strong>, <strong>David Braid</strong> and more (Full list of 缅北强奸 nominees follows below); the majority of members of Carn Davidson 9, nominated for the Traditional Jazz Album of the Year, are also 缅北强奸 faculty and alumni, including <strong>William Carn</strong>, <strong>Tara Davidson</strong> and <strong>Kelly Jefferson</strong>.</p> <p>Rounding out the category is faculty member and alumna <strong>Sienna Dahlen</strong>鈥檚 nomination for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year with collaborator Mike Rud for <em>Notes on Montreal</em>, a musical rendering of the works of Mordecai Richler, Michel Tremblay, Gabrielle Roy and others.</p> <p>鈥淚 feel very blessed to live in a city where there is such an amazing pool of jazz talent, thanks in no small measure to enlightened jazz programs like that at 缅北强奸,鈥 said MacLeod.</p> <p>Several of the 鈥榖ig ticket鈥 nominations, including Album of the Year, Single of the Year, and Alternative Album of the Year, were announced for Arcade Fire, which includes 缅北强奸 Music composition alumnus and current Oscar nominee <strong>Owen Pallett</strong>.<a href="http://news.utoronto.ca/oscar-nomination-alumnus-owen-pallett-chamber-pop-violin-prodigy"><em> (Read about Owen Pallett鈥檚 Oscar nomination)</em></a></p> <p>鈥淥wen's innovative cross-over from classical training to indie performance to film composition reflects an important directional trend showing where music studies are taking our creative entrepreneurial graduates,鈥 said <strong>Don McLean</strong>, dean of the Faculty of Music, upon news of Pallett鈥檚 Academy Award nomination.</p> <p>"Owen was an extraordinary student with a remarkable background," said <strong>Gary Kulesha</strong>, an award-winning composer and one of Pallett's teachers at 缅北强奸. "His interests ranged everywhere. He was talented and focused, and never failed to challenge ideas if he had questions.鈥</p> <p>鈥淚 am not at all surprised he has done well."</p> <p>缅北强奸鈥檚 Classical artists were also recognized widely with Juno nominations.
