MIT landed in first place again this year.</p> <p>Compared to other public universities on the list, 山ǿ placed even higher at 16<sup>th</sup> in the world and third in North America behind Michigan (20<sup>th</sup>) and University of California, Berkeley (27<sup>th</sup>).</p> <p>Last week, 山ǿ was ranked 22<sup>nd</sup> in the world by <a href="/news/u-t-makes-gains-list-universities-best-global-reputations">Times Higher Education</a> based on the strength of its university brand.</p> <p>“The University of Toronto community is thankful for the recognition from our research peers and business leaders around the globe across such a wide range of subject areas,” said <strong>Vivek Goel</strong>, 山ǿ’s vice-president of research and innovation.</p> <p>“It’s clear they see the tremendous value of hiring graduates with a 山ǿ degree and in partnering with our researchers in the pursuit of critically important knowledge. It's rare to have such breadth and depth of scholarship in one institution. This ensures our students have the best and broadest learning opportunities with leading scholars."</p> <p>The University of Toronto was again the top ranked Canadian post-secondary institution by QS, followed by McGill (33<sup>rd</sup>) and UBC (44<sup>th</sup>) in the top 100.</p> <p>QS bases its ranking system on six criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students.</p> <p>When it comes to academic reputation alone, 山ǿ ranked 18<sup>th</sup> in the world, QS reported. University of British Columbia and McGill University were 40th and 42nd respectively. Harvard was first overall.</p> <p>Of the top global institutions, 山ǿ ranked even higher among publicly funded universities, placing 13th in the world – and fourth among North American public universities.</p> <p>“We’re delighted the University of Toronto remains among the top 25 universities globally in recognition of our continuing strong reputation for our teaching and research,” said <strong>Vivek Goel</strong>, 山ǿ’s vice-president of research and innovation. “But in order to maintain our competitiveness, we need to keep investing in Canadian universities, particularly in funding cutting-edge global research.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings for Times Higher Education, said North American universities “will need to ensure they maintain their reputation as the higher education landscape becomes increasingly competitive.”&nbsp;</p> <p>In April, a nine-member panel –&nbsp;chaired by 山ǿ President Emeritus <strong>David Naylor</strong> –&nbsp;conducted <a href="/news/bolstering-canadian-research-u-t-welcomes-federal-science-review">a review of the Government of Canada’s support for fundamental science</a>. Rebekah Robinson, a high school senior from Maryland, told the Post that, as an African American, she was drawn to Toronto for its academic reputation and climate, as well as the diversity in the city. Andrew Hong, a 17-year-old from New Jersey, told the Post&nbsp;he was eager to come&nbsp;to&nbsp;Toronto next fall, to study artificial intelligence at a top-ranked university. The tuition isn’t high compared to many U.S. schools, and the exchange rate makes it particularly affordable, he said.</p> <p>The article also featured Brown University PhD student Khaled Almilaji, who has been stranded in Turkey since the Trump travel ban in January and&nbsp;is considering coming to 山ǿ.&nbsp;His wife is&nbsp;pregnant with their first child and&nbsp;still in Rhode Island. The Syrian citizen was working on a master’s in public health at Brown&nbsp;when his visa was revoked during the first U.S. travel ban while he was on a research trip to Turkey. Among public universities, it ranked third in North America and 13th globally.</p> <p>“We’re pleased to see our ranking results continue to demonstrate 山ǿ’s excellent track record for graduate outcomes and employment,” said <strong>Cheryl Regehr</strong>, 山ǿ’s vice-president and provost.</p> <p>QS said&nbsp;that the ranking incorporates&nbsp;the views of employers through a global survey, as well as alumni outcomes, employment rates, industry partnerships and student-employer connections.</p> <p>“The ranking aims to help prospective students identify institutions with a strong commitment to and outstanding outcomes on graduate employability,” QS&nbsp;said.</p> <p>There was also a notably strong performance for STEM-focused institutions in the rankings, QS found. American universities fared well with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the top two positions. England, China, France and Australia also had institutions in the top 10.</p> <p>Other Canadian universities in the top 50 included: Waterloo (22nd),&nbsp;McGill (28th),&nbsp;and UBC (41st).</p> <p>The QS findings mirror the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) – Global Employability University Ranking that placed 山ǿ first among Canadian universities, 14th in the world and sixth among North American public universities. World Report</em>&nbsp; rankings –&nbsp;山ǿ placed second overall in the <em>Maclean's</em>&nbsp;medical doctoral category, which ranked universities with a broad range of PhD programs and research, as well as medical schools. Other schools in the category included McGill University, the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Alberta.</p> <p>“Canada is fortunate to have a number of strong universities. We’re proud that the value of a University of Toronto degree and the experience of our students learning from some of the top minds in the world is one of the reasons we consistently rank among the very best in the world,” said <strong>Vivek Goel</strong>, 山ǿ’s vice-president of research and innovation.</p> <p>To compile results for its 26th annual survey, <em>Maclean's</em> used five factors (students, faculty, resources, student support and reputation) based on 14 performance indicators. Each indicator was allocated a weight percentage. For example, reputation was worth 15 per cent of the overall score, while nine per cent was allocated to library services and resources.</p> <p>In addition to its reputation survey results, 山ǿ was also at the top&nbsp;in faculty awards, medical and science grants, citations and total research dollars.</p> <p>The magazine’s methodology differs from global rankings. The number of institutions THE rated increased this year from 800 to 980, and included locations around the world, from Zurich to Singapore, Peking to Princeton.</p> <p>“We’re pleased the University of Toronto has once again been recognized as one of the top research universities in the world,” said <strong>Vivek Goel</strong>, 山ǿ’s vice-president of research and innovation. “Today’s results demonstrate the remarkable depth and breadth of our faculty in teaching and producing globally important research from the humanities to computer science to medicine.”</p> <p>Earlier this month, THE released its prestigious annual rankings of the top universities in the world, placing 山ǿ in the 22nd overall spot and ninth among public universities. 山ǿ also retained its title as the top university in Canada for the seventh year in a row.</p> <h3><a href="/news/u-t-again-top-25-best-global-universities">Read more about THE's overall rankings of the top universities</a></h3> <p>This week, 山ǿ also nabbed the 57th spot on <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/amers-reuters-ranking-innovative-univers-idUSL2N1C406D">Reuters World’s Most Innovative Universities</a> list — one of two Canadian universities to be recognized.</p> <p>In a change this year to the way it ranks universities according to disciplines, Times Higher Education included two new subjects: computer science and business and economics, ranking 山ǿ 17th and 21st in these fields. Previously, they were included in engineering and technology and social sciences.</p> <p>THE ranked the University of Toronto:</p> <ul> <li>14th in clinical, pre-clinical and health (11th last year)</li> <li>15th in arts and humanities (14th last year)</li> <li>17th in computer science (new ranking)</li> <li>19th in social sciences (same as last year)</li> <li>21st in business and economics (new ranking)</li> <li>22nd in life sciences (17th last year)</li> <li>25th in physical sciences (20th last year)</li> <li>31st in engineering and technology (25th last year)</li> </ul> <p>THE, like other independent ranking systems, uses different criteria and weighs them according to its&nbsp;own rules and standards. Another two MPI fellows also made their debut in the ranking,</p> <p>With a total of five thinkers&nbsp;in the ranking, 山ǿ accounts for 10 per cent of the total.&nbsp;</p> <p>Professor&nbsp;<strong>Roger Martin</strong>, the former dean of the Rotman School and current Institution Director of its MPI, placed seventh&nbsp;in the ranking and was cited for his work in Strategy, Integrative Thinking and Social Entrepreneurship. &nbsp;</p> <p>Martin was also the joint winner, with Sally Osberg, Skoll Foundation President &amp; CEO, of the Social Enterprise Award. Their book,&nbsp;<em>Getting Beyond Better: How Social Entrepreneurship Works</em>, was published by Harvard Business Review Press, earlier this year.</p> <h2><a href="http://news.utoronto.ca/social-entrepreneurship-explained">Read more about Martin and <em>Getting Beyond Better</em></a></h2> <p><strong>Don Tapscott</strong>, an adjunct professor and fellow at the MPI, placed fourth&nbsp;on the list for the second consecutive ranking.&nbsp;He is considered to be a leading authority on innovation, media, globalization and the economic and social impact of technology on business and society.<br> &nbsp;<br> Professor&nbsp;<strong>Richard Florida</strong>, director at the MPI, made a strong showing on this year’s ranking placing 14th, up from 25th in 2013. He is globally recognized for his leading work on the creative class, innovation and the drivers of city prosperity.&nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br> The two MPI fellows who debuted on the list are&nbsp;<strong>Nilofer Merchant</strong> placing 48th and Professor&nbsp;<strong>Adam Grant</strong> of the Wharton School placing 25th.&nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br> A record 14&nbsp;women were included in the ranking and 14&nbsp;thinkers also made their debuts in the ranking this year.&nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br> For the second ranking in a row, Canada was well represented with two thinkers in the top 10 with the Rotman School’s Martin and&nbsp;Tapscott. Canadian Syd Finkelstein, a professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College also made the list and&nbsp;Canadian Henry Mintzberg of the Desaultels Faculty of Management at McGill University received a lifetime achievement award.&nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br> “Interesting times yield interesting ideas,” Thinkers50 founders Stuart Crainer and Des Dearlove said. “How we view business and how business is practiced is changing.
