The AHEHC was established in 2022 to drive primary health-care workforce education, entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa.

This is Naturinda鈥檚 second time studying abroad with the Mastercard Foundation. He became the first in his family to study outside the country when he was awarded a scholarship to pursue an undergraduate degree in laboratory medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.

He later returned home during the COVID-19 pandemic to volunteer in the clinical microbiology and immunology departments at a local hospital. The experience prompted him to think about how to improve systems that were suddenly facing new pressures at already burdened hospitals 鈥 namely the continued use of paper records.

Medical records are the building blocks for developing efficient and effective intelligent medicine models, he says, while intelligent medicine refers to the use of machine learning models to process medical data and reduce errors in patient care. Large datasets may also allow medical professionals to spot health patterns 鈥 an emerging epidemic, for example 鈥 to better prepare for public health threats.

However, low-to-middle-income countries face many barriers to digitizing medical data, including limited access to technology and the absence of standardized data formats. The use of paper records also causes delays in retrieving laboratory results and makes it difficult to understand patients鈥 medical histories efficiently.

鈥淭he digitization of medical records is essential for developing and training predictive models,鈥 Naturinda says. 鈥淯nique electronic datasets from these communities provide the more accurate and reliable information needed to account for unique socio-cultural factors and effectively develop models tailored to address those specific challenges.鈥

Naturinda will work under the guidance of Karim Keshavjee, an assistant professor and director of the master of health informatics program. In addition to intelligent medicine, Naturinda says he also has a key interest in implementation science, or the study of methods to ensure research is translated into policy, programs and startups.

One of Canada鈥檚 few professional graduate programs in the field, the master of health informatics program provides students with the skills and strategic vision to take on leadership positions in health-care landscape.

The opportunity to learn industry-specific knowledge from health leaders is what made the program a perfect fit, Naturinda says.

鈥淥ne of the reasons I chose the MHI program is because it is training us to be leaders, innovators and policymakers. I wanted to seek mentorship from people who were making a big impact in strengthening health-care systems in Canada.鈥

Public health isn鈥檛 the only field where Naturinda is hoping to make an impact. He also wants to help others as an entrepreneur 鈥 a journey that鈥檚 already well underway.

During his undergrad, he co-founded the Nugget Poultry Farm to help smallholder farmers in western Uganda raise poultry more effectively and improve food access back home. The venture aims to support 1,000 farmers in 20 communities by 2027 and has received a Social Venture Challenge Award from the Mastercard Foundation and the Resolution Project.

Naturinda enhanced his business knowledge through the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship on Entrepreneurship at Queen鈥檚 University. Now a program coach, he has trained more than 500 entrepreneurs from Africa-based startups addressing various issues in agribusiness, climate change and health care.

Naturinda is eager to tap into 缅北强奸鈥檚 network of entrepreneurs and has wasted no time reaching out to various groups, including the Black Founders Network.

鈥淲hen I train entrepreneurs, I see the impact of them pitching their ventures or winning a grant. It鈥檚 the type of impact that I want to see with my research, and bridging those two passions is an ideal step forward,鈥 Naturinda says.

鈥淎s I progress at 缅北强奸, I look forward to leveraging opportunities that speak to my background in entrepreneurship, health care and research to make sure that I implement them together.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 07 Oct 2024 13:40:31 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309742 at With the launch of its first satellite, student team charts a course to new knowledge /news/launch-its-first-satellite-student-team-charts-course-new-knowledge With the launch of its first satellite, student team charts a course to new knowledge

rahul.kalvapalle Fri, 01/19/2024 - 12:44

Cutline

A Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Nov. 11, 2023, carrying a satellite designed and built by the University of Toronto Aerospace Team (photo courtesy of SpaceX)

Safa Jinje

Topic

Our Community

Aerospace

Electrical & Computer Engineering

Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

Graduate Students

Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

Space

Undergraduate Students

UTIAS

Subheadline

鈥淲e worked on this project for so long with such a narrow focus that actually seeing it deployed was very rewarding鈥

Students in the University of Toronto鈥檚 Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering recently gathered in the basement of the Sandford Fleming Building 鈥 known to many as 鈥淭he Pit鈥 鈥 to witness the deployment of HERON Mk. The university also tied for 15th place in the newly added category of governance.

鈥淭he University of Toronto community is absolutely delighted by this recognition of our global leadership in sustainability,鈥 said 缅北强奸 President Meric Gertler. 鈥淚t is a wonderful tribute to the innovation and commitment of the many 缅北强奸 faculty, students, staff and alumni who are dedicated to meeting every aspect of this great challenge of the 21st century.

鈥淭hey are demonstrating that effective action is possible on our campuses, in our communities and around the world.鈥

The QS sustainability ranking evaluates universities based on data used in the QS World University Rankings. That includes information from reputation surveys and research output related to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It also considers the availability of institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and World Bank.

The ranking uses more than 75 data points, grouped into nine lenses, to rank institutions in its three main categories. For environmental impact, the ranking examines environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it looks at employability and outcomes, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking evaluates indicators of good governance such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.

New data points introduced this year include net-zero commitments, renewable energy generation and citations of scholarly research in policy documents.

缅北强奸鈥檚 exceptional global performance headlined a strong showing by Canada, which had two universities in the top five and three in the top 10 鈥 more than any other country (the University of British Columbia ranked fourth and Western University ranked 10th).

The QS sustainability ranking comes amid several high-profile sustainability initiatives across 缅北强奸鈥檚 three campuses in recent years.

On the St. George campus, 缅北强奸 has implemented a number of infrastructure projects aimed at achieving the goal of becoming climate-positive by 2050 鈥 a goal it now expects to reach well ahead of schedule and has since been expanded to 缅北强奸 Mississauga and 缅北强奸 Scarborough. These include the construction of Canada鈥檚 largest urban geoexchange field beneath Front Campus, set to be operational in spring 2024, and plans for a significant retrofit of its district energy systems via Project LEAP, an effort supported by the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

At 缅北强奸 Mississauga, sustainability is embedded into academic programs, research and campus operations per the Sustainability Strategic Plan. The campus has a high-tech geothermal system beside the Instructional Centre and is actively expanding the use of solar energy across its buildings. 缅北强奸 Mississauga also launched Project SHIFT, an initiative to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to electricity.

缅北强奸 Scarborough, too, has placed sustainability at the forefront of curricula, partnerships and planning through initiatives supported by its Sustainability Office. This fall, 缅北强奸 Scarborough opened a new student residence that meets Passive House standards for energy-efficient construction and is also proceeding with new climate-responsible constructions including the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) and the EaRTH (Phase 2) complex, part of the collaborative EaRTH District initiative that includes plans for a net-zero vertical farm. It's also the host of SDGs @ 缅北强奸, an institutional strategic initiative working to advance the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Nearly 30 per cent of all undergraduate courses at 缅北强奸 in 2023-24 have a sustainability orientation, up from 25 per cent the previous year, and there are more than 100 graduate and PhD programs with sustainability-related content. Undergraduate students in all programs can participate in the Sustainability Pathways program, which allows them to explore sustainability from various disciplinary lenses and perspectives. Undergraduate and graduate students alike can also contribute to real-world sustainability initiatives on- and off-campus via the Campus as a Living Lab and Community-Engaged Learning initiatives.

The university is also making significant progress toward its 2021 commitment to divest from fossil fuel investments in its endowment fund and now collects a fee on all university-funded air travel to fund decarbonization and biodiversity projects on campus.

And researchers across the three campuses 鈥 such as those working with Climate Positive Energy, another 缅北强奸 institutional strategic initiative 鈥 are generating new discoveries, technologies and knowledge that are contributing to a more sustainable future.

In a press release announcing the ranking, QS noted universities鈥 sustainability credentials play an increasingly important role in students鈥 decisions on where they want to study.

鈥淥ur 2023 Sustainability Survey revealed a striking trend: 79 per cent of prospective international students view an institution鈥檚 sustainability practices as extremely or very important. Science as a member of New College with an eye toward entering the computer science program in his second year. 鈥淥ur teacher assigned us to create something that would improve the quality of life in Toronto.鈥

He says had wanted to attend 缅北强奸 ever since middle school and made up his mind when he discovered the university had a specialist program for designing computer interfaces.

鈥淚 was immediately interested, as that relates directly to how I want to thrive in my career. It was very clear to me from the beginning that 缅北强奸 was going to be my top choice 鈥 and so I actually didn鈥檛 end up applying anywhere else.鈥

Inspired by a transit-focused episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj鈥檚 talk show Patriot Act and his own burgeoning interest in computer science, Ali decided to focus on a digital solution to the issue of transit cuts and fare hikes due to transit agencies鈥 lack of revenue.

鈥淭ransit+ is like Starbucks Rewards for your transit fare,鈥 he explains. 鈥淭he more you ride the TTC or Metrolinx using your Presto card, the more points you would be able to rack up 鈥 and at the end of the week or month, you could redeem them for a free bus ride or even a weekly or monthly pass. And if you wanted to incorporate small businesses around the city, you could have them do promotions within the app for you to redeem using Presto or your credit card.鈥

Ali points to other transit agencies that have implemented similar systems over the years, such as the STM Merci loyalty program in Montreal that was able to generate $100 million in additional revenue from new ridership over the course of its three-year pilot project, according to a study, or Hong Kong鈥檚 Octopus smartcard and its rider perks.

鈥淩ight now, the app is very focused on the rewards program 鈥 it鈥檚 meant to incentivize people who are either considering using transit, or already using it, to use it more frequently. If you're able to increase ridership, you increase the total revenue that the agency is able to bring in,鈥 Ali says.

Encouraged by his teachers and fellow classmates, Ali kept fine-tuning his idea for the Transit+ app throughout high school while continuing to learn more about computing by watching YouTube videos and taking a Grade 10 computer science course.

鈥淚鈥檓 interested in computer science because of how it enables you to create things that are accessible to so many people,鈥 Ali says.

He credits his experience at Wilfrid Laurier for helping him prepare to enter university.

鈥淭he teachers there were absolutely wonderful in guiding everyone throughout our high school career 鈥 especially in the last two years in the IB program,鈥 Ali says.

鈥淭here was definitely a competitive atmosphere, but it just fueled everybody to try and do the absolute best they could in whatever field they wanted to get into. And happily, everybody in my friend group was able to get into their top choice for university.鈥

Ali鈥檚 former geography teacher, Karen Pak 鈥 who graduated from the master's program at 缅北强奸's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in 2017 鈥 says the school project that led to Ali's app was based on principles from the Global Ideas Institute at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, where she was formerly the mentor program manager. She says Ali's enthusiasm for learning will serve him well in university.

鈥淎s an educator, you always hope that students will be sparked by something to make learning truly tangible and applicable,鈥 Pak says.

鈥淶arif deserves all the credit in taking this opportunity and turning it into a pathway for his creativity and intellect 鈥 a winning combination. I know he will go on to accomplish incredible innovations and inspire others to do the same.鈥

As he gets ready to start at 缅北强奸 in September, Ali is as focused on his academic goals as he was on building Transit+.

鈥淚鈥檓 hoping that I can meet the requirements to get into the computer science major. After second year, I want to go into the focus in human-computer interaction program, because that鈥檚 where you get to learn about design fundamentals.

鈥淎nd I鈥檓 hoping to meet like-minded people at 缅北强奸 who are also as passionate about computer science and improving things like transit or looking at other things that could be very simple to implement, but could dramatically improve our quality of life,鈥 Ali says, adding that he鈥檚 planning to join some of 缅北强奸鈥檚 entrepreneurship clubs and accelerators to help him further develop his app.

For Transit+ to become a reality, Ali knows he鈥檇 need buy-in from TTC and Metrolinx 鈥 and has already reached out to local politicians, activists and transit staff who've offered feedback and even helped him refine his pitch.

Ironically, Ali 鈥 who immigrated to Scarborough from Bangladesh with his parents in 2010 鈥 has never been much of a transit rider himself. But that鈥檚 all about to change as he gears up for his daily commute to campus this fall.

鈥淚've always been lucky enough to have my schools or wherever I need to go really close by, so I never really rode transit that much,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut now that I'm coming downtown to attend 缅北强奸, I feel like having a program like Transit+ in place would be great.鈥

News home page banner

On

Add new story tags

Back to School 2023

Mon, 28 Aug 2023 17:25:49 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 302742 at 5 things students need to know as 缅北强奸 gears up for classes this fall /news/5-things-students-need-know-u-t-gears-classes-fall 5 things students need to know as 缅北强奸 gears up for classes this fall

mattimar <time datetime="2023-08-24T15:09:00-04:00" title="Thursday, August 24, 2023 - The group then held focus groups and consultations to better understand the issues.

鈥淲e felt a great sense of responsibility to be entrusted with the stories and hopes of all the different members of the community, and also then the responsibility to take those disparate experiences and crystallize them into recommendations that the university could actually act on,鈥 Chin said.

That process informed the recommendations in the final report, which are grouped into eight key areas: institutional accountability, data and transparency; communications; hiring, reviews and career development; education, training and mentorship; teaching, curriculum and research; community and belonging; health, wellness and support; and resources (funding, staffing and research).

In its response to the report, 缅北强奸鈥檚 administration notes the university is implementing proposed actions as a result of the working group鈥檚 consultations and other ongoing equity-related initiatives, and pledges to take meaningful action on creating a more supportive environment for members of 缅北强奸鈥檚 Asian community.

鈥淭he Anti-Asian Racism Working Group鈥檚 recommendations have provided a concrete foundation upon which a more equitable 缅北强奸 community may flourish, while recognizing that inclusion and belonging on our campuses cannot take a one-size-fits-all approach,鈥 said 缅北强奸 Vice-President and Provost Cheryl Regehr.

鈥淎s a result of this important initiative, we commit to an increased vigilance in identifying and confronting anti-Asian racism at 缅北强奸 and society at large. We hope that the measures taken in response to this report will result in members of the 缅北强奸 Asian community feeling how deeply valued they are as individuals and contributors to our collective and shared success.鈥

The 缅北强奸 community will be updated on progress related to the report鈥檚 recommendations via the commitments tracking webpage of the Institutional Equity Office.

鈥淭he multidimensional work of responding to racism at the university requires a collective effort,鈥 said Acting Vice-President, People Strategy, Equity & Culture Heather Boon. 鈥淲e recognize the diversity of experience within and across 缅北强奸鈥檚 Asian community, and we aim to create a more supportive environment in which all our members feel they belong.

鈥淲e will continue to support initiatives that contribute to the well-being and success of Asian faculty, librarians, students and staff.鈥

Lingyin Shen, co-lead of the Anti-Asian Racism Working Group鈥檚 students and curricula subcommittee, said she was encouraged by the feedback throughout the group鈥檚 year-long process and hopes their report will lead to substantive change.

鈥淚 hope the administration is going to take a very close look at the report and consider all the voices and recommendations, and implement them in a way that is open-minded and practical,鈥 said Shen, who is a 缅北强奸 graduate in East Asian studies and works at the Centre for International Experience as an international student immigration adviser.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a good pathway moving forward,鈥 added subcommittee co-lead Wan Li, a recent 缅北强奸 graduate in geography and contemporary Asian studies.

Co-chairs Chin and Chadalawada said they鈥檙e pleased with the administration鈥檚 response to the report and note discussion on the issues will continue beyond the working group.

鈥淭he whole 缅北强奸 community wants change to happen 鈥 and the institution is genuinely committed to change,鈥 Chadalawada said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the perfect balance of everyone feeling the need to work together to make that change happen.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 29 May 2023 12:51:58 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 301817 at Congratulations to the Class of 2023!
