Physical Education.</p> <p>鈥淚t鈥檚 also a time for settlers to reflect on what they can do to strengthen relationships with Indigenous Peoples in order to build a better future together.鈥<br> <br> The 缅北强奸 community is invited to honour the experiences of residential school survivors by joining <a href="https://people.utoronto.ca/event/2024-orange-shirt-day-and-national-truth-reconciliation-day/">a&nbsp;tri-campus event</a>&nbsp;being held in the Great Hall at Hart House on Sept. 30 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.&nbsp;Participants will have the option to&nbsp;register to attend the event in person&nbsp;or&nbsp;register to watch the live-stream on YouTube.</p> <p>The event will feature a keynote address by&nbsp;<strong>Shirley Cheechoo</strong>, Canadian Cree actor, artist, filmmaker and founder of Weengushk Film Institute, who will be introduced by&nbsp;<strong>Benji Jacob</strong>, a fourth-year psychology student from 缅北强奸 Mississauga. They describe Croutch as 鈥渁 deeply engaged and passionate expert鈥 who 鈥渃hallenges us with uncomfortable truths in a way that inspires further reflection and learning.鈥&nbsp;</p> <p>Another participant described the sessions as 鈥渢he history lesson we should have gotten in school.鈥&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>While Croutch says he still encounters some individuals who want to debate the history or challenge his teachings, he鈥檚 seen a shift in how people react to the training over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淚 have noticed a definite upswing in awareness and less resistance than I did in 2019,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 believe that the university is doing much more to facilitate that awareness of Indigenous presence and futurity 鈥 for example, Indigenous land acknowledgments, the accommodation of smudging, the&nbsp;<a href="https://indigenouslandscape.utoronto.ca/">Ziibiing landscape project</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/indigenous/placekeeping">Maanjiwe nendamowinan</a>&nbsp;building at the Mississauga campus,&nbsp;<a href="/news/eagle-feather-introduced-convocation-ceremonies-symbol-u-t-s-commitment-reconciliation">Feather Bearers</a>&nbsp;at convocation, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://registrar.utoronto.ca/finances-and-funding/indigenous-tuition-initiative/">Indigenous Tuition Initiative</a>&nbsp;to name a few.</p> <p>&nbsp;鈥淭here is also less resistance to the trainings, I believe, because as more people train, the resisters are beginning to become the outliers.鈥</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> Fri, 12 Apr 2024 21:05:10 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307412 at
