The University of Toronto climbed one spot to fourth place globally in the latest National Taiwan University ranking, which evaluates universities based on their research output and impact.

�山ǿ��’s strong performance in the 2024 edition of the NTU World University Rankings, released this week, puts it in elite global company. The four other schools in the top five were Harvard University, Stanford University, University College London and the University of Oxford.

Among public universities, �山ǿ�� placed second globally and first in North America.

“This ranking is yet another reminder that the research produced at the University of Toronto is truly world-class,” said Leah Cowen, �山ǿ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“It also reflects our reputation for research excellence and impact across a broad range of fields – from medicine to the social sciences.”

The NTU ranking analyzes scholarly papers and research citations, scoring each institution based on productivity, impact and excellence. The top 1,000 universities were ranked this year with more than 1,500 considered.

In addition to the overall ranking, NTU ranked universities by six broad fields and 27 specific subjects.

�山ǿ�� ranked among the top 50 institutions worldwide – and first in Canada – in four of the six broad fields. Notably, that includes a rank of second globally in medicine, the same as last year, and third globally in social sciences – up three spots.

�山ǿ�� also ranked among the top 10 universities globally in five subject categories: clinical medicine (second), neurosciences and behaviour (third), social sciences (third), psychiatry and psychology (fourth) and biology and biochemistry (sixth).

Two other Canadian universities made the top 100 in the main NTU ranking: University of British Columbia (37th) and McGill University (57th).

Overall, �山ǿ�� continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

The University of Toronto is ranked first in Canada and 26th globally in the latest edition of ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s worldwide university ranking.

Among public universities, �山ǿ�� placed sixth in North America and 15th overall in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released last week. The ranking’s creators evaluated more than 2,500 universities to determine the 1,000 included in this year’s publication.

The Shanghai ranking comes on the heels of �山ǿ��’s strong performance in two other rankings this year: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings and the QS World University Rankings, which respectively ranked �山ǿ�� 17th and 25th overall.

“These results are a testament to the University of Toronto’s global reputation for scholarly excellence and high quality, impactful research across a wide range of disciplines,” said Trevor Young, �山ǿ��’s vice-president and provost.

“The credit goes to our entire academic and research community and their commitment to furthering knowledge, while working tirelessly to address some of the most complex global challenges of our time.”

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is based on six weighted measures of research and academic performance collected from third-party sources. They include: the number of alumni and faculty winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories; the number of papers published in the prestigious journals Nature and Science; articles cited in major science and social sciences citation indices; and each institution’s per capita academic performance across all faculty members.

�山ǿ��, which ranked 24th in the 2023 edition of the ranking, was joined by two other Canadian universities in the top 100: the University of British Columbia (47th) and McGill University (74th).

The five highest ranked universities were Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley.

The research-focused 2024-2025 Best Global Universities Rankings placed �山ǿ�� 10th among public universities worldwide and fifth among public institutions in North America

The University of Toronto has been ranked 17^th in the world, up one spot from last year, in the latest global university ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2024-25 edition of the Best Global Universities Rankings, which focuses on research performance, also placed �山ǿ�� 10^th among public universities worldwide and fifth among all public institutions in North America.

�山ǿ�� remained Canada’s top-ranked university in the closely watched international ranking.

“This latest ranking positions the University of Toronto among a small group of elite institutions that are making important new discoveries and generating critical new knowledge across a range of fields,” said �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler.

“Our researchers and scholars can take pride in this recognition of the impact they are having on a global scale.”

Using data from Clarivate Analytics, U.S. News & World Report assessed 2,250 universities through the lens of research performance, as measured by indicators such as global and regional reputations, citations, scholarly publications, international collaboration and citation impact.

�山ǿ�� ranked among the top 10 universities in the world in eight subject areas: clinical medicine (third), endocrinology and metabolism (third), cardiac and cardiovascular systems (fourth), surgery (fourth), arts and humanities (fifth), social sciences and public health (fifth), oncology (eighth) and psychiatry/psychology (ninth).

Among Canadian schools, �山ǿ�� ranked first in a total of 28 different subjects.

This year’s ranking included four new subject areas – bringing the total to 51 subjects – and covered an additional 250 schools.

Two other Canadian universities joined �山ǿ�� among the top 100 globally in the most recent U.S. News & World Report ranking: the University of British Columbia, which ranked 39^th, and McGill University at 56^th.

The top five universities globally in this year’s ranking were: Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford and the University of California, Berkeley.

The University of Toronto is ranked first in Canada, second among North American public universities and among the top 25 institutions globally in the latest QS World University Rankings.

�山ǿ�� continued to be recognized as one of the world’s leading public universities in the highly regarded annual ranking, placing just behind the University of California, Berkeley in North America.

The ranking, the largest-ever by U.K. analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, was released June 4 and placed �山ǿ�� first in Canada and 25^th overall among more than 1,500 institutions.

�山ǿ��’s performance was buoyed by its scores for academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, international reach and sustainability – a category in which it ranked first in the world.

“This ranking affirms once again that the University of Toronto provides a world-class education, generates important new research and prepares our graduates for leadership in virtually every field,” said �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler.

QS sampled a broader swath of schools for the 21^st edition of the global ranking, nearly doubling the number of institutions it evaluated to determine its published list of 1,500 universities across 106 education systems.

This year’s ranking also saw a reshuffling among the top echelon as universities from Asia and Europe continued to climb the charts. Several elite U.S. universities experienced double-digit drops, while �山ǿ�� was down four spots compared to last year.

Nine weighted indicators are used to calculate a university’s overall score in the ranking. Based on a survey of international scholars, academic reputation carries the most weight at 30 per cent. �山ǿ�� ranked 11^th globally on that front.

�山ǿ�� also earned top marks for employer reputation, which accounts for 15 per cent of the score, based on a survey of employers from around the world.

Other indicators considered include: faculty-student ratio; citations per faculty; international faculty; international students; international research network; employment outcomes; and sustainability, where �山ǿ�� took top spot.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and University of Oxford took the top three spots in the ranking.

Alongside �山ǿ��, three other Canadian universities made the top 100: McGill University (29^th), University of British Columbia (38^th) and University of Alberta (96^th).

The University of Toronto is ranked among the top 20 universities globally across all five broad subject fields featured in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 – including a coveted top-10 spot for arts and humanities.

The rankings, compiled by London-based analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluate universities’ performance across five broad subject fields and 55 more specific subjects.

In the five broad fields, �山ǿ�� ranked 10th in arts and humanities, 12th in social sciences and management, 13th in life sciences and medicine, 17th in engineering and technology and 19th in natural sciences.

It also made the global top 10 in seven more specific subject areas: sports-related subjects (5th), nursing (5th), education (8th), data science (9th), English language and literature (10th), mineral and mining engineering (10th) and philosophy (10th).

Moreover, �山ǿ�� placed among the top 50 institutions in 46 subjects – more than any other university in the world – and scored in the top 25 in 34 subjects behind only the University of California, Berkeley; University of Cambridge; Harvard University, University of Oxford, National University of Singapore and University of California, Los Angeles.

“These latest rankings recognize �山ǿ��’s place among an elite group of global universities that consistently demonstrate academic and research excellence across a broad array of disciplines,” said �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler.

“This wide range of scholarly expertise, along with �山ǿ��’s culture of multidisciplinary collaboration, puts us in a unique position to tackle some of the most complex and pressing challenges of our time, from treating cancer to addressing climate change.”

For the 2024 edition of its subject rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds ranked nearly 1,600 universities across 55 subjects. The results are based on indicators including academic and employer surveys, research citations per paper, an index that quantifies the productivity and impact of an institution’s published work and a metric that reflects the reach of international collaborations.

Globally, the university made gains in 21 subjects this year, including jumping 12 spots to 21st place in communication and media studies and an 11-spot rise to secure 10th place in mineral and mining engineering.

�山ǿ�� also climbed the ranks in four of the broad fields, ascending 10 spots in engineering and technology, five in arts and humanities, four in natural sciences and three in social sciences and management. Its standing remained unchanged in life sciences and medicine.

Among Canadian universities, �山ǿ�� ranked first in all five broad fields and first in 34 more specific subject areas.

In total, �山ǿ�� was ranked by QS in 50 of the rankings’ 55 subjects.

A recent ranking of universities’ “visibility” placed �山ǿ�� fifth in the world when it comes to news reports, social media and online searches

The University of Toronto is routinely ranked as one of the world’s top universities for research and teaching – and the public is taking notice.

Consistently ranked among the world’s top 25 universities in the most closely watched international rankings, there is growing evidence that �山ǿ��’s global reputation is expanding well beyond the realm of academia. For example, employers already consider �山ǿ�� graduates among the most desirable hires in the world and the university recently earned the title of the most sustainable post-secondary institution on the planet.

Now, the inaugural edition of American Caldwell’s Global University Visibility (GUV) Rankings, updated earlier this year, ranked �山ǿ�� fifth in the world when it comes to public interest as measured by online searches, social media followers and web traffic, among other metrics.

Moreover, �山ǿ�� was the only public university – and the only university outside the United States – to place in the top five. The others were Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Cornell University.

N. Alexander Kader, partner at D.C.-based American Caldwell, says the GUV rankings, first released in 2023, are meant to complement traditional university rankings – which tend to focus on academic metrics, including publications and citations in peer-reviewed journals – by capturing institutional recognition among the public at large.

"[The visibility rankings] originated from a discussion of traditional university metrics of counting publications,” he says. “The challenge is not knowing how many people were seeing them or if they were available to the general public. Thus, we decided to see if visibility could be measured."

News mentions are the most heavily weighted metric in GUV’s calculations, followed by Google searches, says Kader. Social media followers and website traffic also factor into the visibility rankings, he adds, and American Caldwell tracks web references, the quantity of publicly available online information and video on YouTube.

Christine Szustaczek, �山ǿ��’s vice-president, communications, says GUV’s indicators of online interest likely favour both English speakers and large universities, but nevertheless suggest a growing number of people around the world want to know what’s happening at �山ǿ��. She adds that the more people learn, the more likely they are to become students, faculty, donors and industry partners.

“It shows that people around the world care about the University of Toronto, and that we matter because it proves that people are seeking information about us,” says Szustaczek. “[Our visibility] rests on the excellence of our teaching and research, the quality of our students and the opportunities they get at �山ǿ��, the accomplishments of our alumni and our collaborations and partnerships across the globe. These are the topics that pique the public’s curiosity and earn their interest.”

Szustaczek notes that �山ǿ��’s pronounced position in the public’s consciousness is also a testament to the people across �山ǿ�� who share these achievements with audiences around the world.

“Visibility is important, because it helps audiences form a positive opinion of the university, based on their knowledge of what makes us unique,” she says. “Reputation is a perceptual construct – it's something that lives in other people’s hearts and minds. By extension, it follows that an organization can’t have a reputation if they’re not visible. “By sharing our impact broadly and proudly with the world – we’re giving others an opportunity to get to know us, to partner with us and support us.”

The University of Toronto is among an elite group of universities whose teaching and research are highly regarded by the world’s leading scholars, according to new rankings by Times Higher Education.

The magazine’s World Reputation Rankings 2023, announced Tuesday, ranked �山ǿ�� first in Canada and 21st globally – unchanged from the previous year – based on a survey that asks experienced, published academics for their opinions on teaching and research excellence.

Among public universities, �山ǿ�� ranked fourth in North America and 12th overall.

“This latest affirmation of the University of Toronto’s global reputation is based on the independent assessments of scholars around the world who are leaders in their respective fields,” said �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler.

“Our international stature reflects our excellence in teaching and research, and is a key factor in attracting outstanding students and faculty to our three campuses.”

The World Reputation Rankings are based on the world’s largest invitation-only survey of scholars, comprising more than 38,000 responses from 166 countries.

Respondents were asked to select up to 15 universities that they consider to be the best in research, as well as universities they deem as being the best for teaching. The final ranking scores were based on the number of times that respondents cited institutions as being among the best in their respective field.

The World Reputation Rankings are among several highly regarded Times Higher Education rankings that have consistently placed �山ǿ�� among the world’s top institutions of higher learning. Others include: the World University Rankings by Subject, in which �山ǿ�� was among just six universities to rank in the top 30 globally across all 11 subjects in the ranking; the Global Employability University Rankings, which ranked �山ǿ�� 12th in the world; and the main World University Rankings, which ranked �山ǿ�� 21st globally in the most recent edition.

Other Canadian universities that ranked in the top 50 of THE’s World Reputation Rankings 2023 were the University of British Columbia (36th) and McGill University (47th).

University of Toronto graduates are among the world’s most desirable in the eyes of employers, according to a new ranking by Times Higher Education.

�山ǿ�� was ranked 12th in the world and the number-one public university in North America in the magazine’s graduate Global Employability University Ranking 2023-2024, which surveys top employers to determine which universities produce graduates with the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.

The ranking evaluated 250 universities from 44 countries.

“The global demand for University of Toronto graduates reflects the quality of the students we attract and the education we provide,” said �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler.

“Our faculty and staff equip students with the knowledge, experience and outlook needed to excel in their careers, drive innovation in their respective fields and make a positive impact in the world.”

Designed by HR consultancy Emerging, the ranking is based on a survey of recruiters and managers from leading companies, most of which have a workforce exceeding 500 employees. This year’s results were based on 100,700 votes cast by 11,560 participants, each of whom can select up to 10 universities.

�山ǿ�� has consistently ranked among the top 15 globally in the Times Higher Education employability ranking over the past decade, and it held the 11th spot last year.

This year’s edition of the ranking was led by the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Four Canadian universities joined �山ǿ�� in the top 100: McGill University (31st), University of British Columbia (36th), Université de Montréal (72nd) and McMaster University (85th).

The University of Toronto is ranked first in Canada – and is among a handful of schools to rank in the top 30 globally – across all 11 subjects tracked by Times Higher Education in the 2024 edition of its international subject rankings.

�山ǿ�� scored in the top 10 worldwide in three subjects in the closely watched ranking, which was released Oct. 26. They are education, psychology and clinical and health, which encompasses medicine, dentistry and other health fields.

The university was also among just six post-secondary institutions to rank in the top 30 globally across all 11 subjects in the World University Rankings 2024 by Subject. To compare universities, Times Higher Education considers an array of performance indicators across five pillars – teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry – and assigns different weightings depending on the subject. For its 2024 edition, the U.K.-based publication updated its methodology, expanding its research-related metrics, while adding a new indicator for patents.

�山ǿ�� climbed through the global ranks in six subjects, including a nine-spot leap to place 10th in psychology and rising four positions to 9th in education. It also made gains in the arts and humanities (to 13th from 15th), social sciences (to 24th from 26th), business and economics (to 24th from 25th) and engineering (to 25th from 26th).

The university maintained high scores in the remaining five subjects: clinical and health (9th), law (21st), computer science (25th), physical sciences (25th) and life sciences (27th).

Last month, �山ǿ�� was ranked the top university in Canada, 21st globally and third among North American public universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The University of Toronto has been ranked the top university in Canada, 21^st globally and third among North American public universities in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The closely watched international ranking, released Wednesday, evaluated more than 1,900 research-intensive universities across the globe based on their performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

�山ǿ�� – which placed 10^th among public universities worldwide – was 15^th overall in the research environment category, which reflects a university’s reputation for research excellence among its peers.

“The University of Toronto is recognized consistently on the global stage for its comprehensive excellence in teaching, research and impact,” �山ǿ�� President Meric Gertler said.

“This latest ranking is a tremendous credit to our dynamic community of researchers, learners, teachers and innovators.”

The Times Higher Education ranking assesses five areas – teaching, research environment, research quality, research excellence and industry – and draws from data sources including surveys of scholars, bibliometric analyses of academic databases and information about a university’s population, income and partnerships with industry.

For the 20^th edition of the ranking, Times Higher Education changed its methodology by expanding the number of performance indicators within the research category to include new metrics for research strength, research excellence and research influence, as well as adding an indicator for patents to the industry category.

There was some rearrangement among the top tier of universities compared to the 2023 ranking. �山ǿ�� swapped spots with University of California, Los Angeles, which took 18^th place, followed by National University of Singapore and Cornell University.

The top five universities in the ranking were: University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and University of Cambridge.

Other Canadian schools in the top 200 included: University of British Columbia (41^st), McGill University (49^th), McMaster University (103^rd), University of Alberta (109^th), Université de Montréal (111^th) University of Waterloo (158^th) and University of Ottawa (177^th).

President Gertler spoke in a session on improving Indigenous access to higher education following �山ǿ��’s recently announced initiative to cover tuition for students from nine neighbouring First Nations.

Overall, �山ǿ�� continues to be one of the world’s top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.
